A History of Success for Hindus

Divali festival souvenir magazine 2001

The Indo-Caribbean Cultural Council (ICC) wishes to announce the publication of its latest souvenir magazine - Divali 2001, Trinidad and Tobago. The theme of this edition of its annual magazine is “A History of Success for Hindus.”

As the world observes the first Divali celebrations in the new millennium, Hindus in the Caribbean need to reflect on their history as a people. Out of the darkness of indentureship (1838 – 1917) came the light of a new dawn which revealed several achievements as well as challenges. In Trinidad and Tobago, after a brief Hindu presence in Cabinet under the NAR government of 1986, Basdeo Panday was elected the first Hindu Prime Minister of the country in 1995. The Education Minister presided over the construction of the Parvati, Shiva and Vishnu Colleges, and The World Hindu Conference was held in Trinidad in August 2000. There was the launch of the country’s newest Indian music radio station, Masala 101.1 FM. There is the hope that it would introduce more talk shows to complement those of Power 102, and in so doing, Hindus and Indians would be free to express themselves on issues that affect them in their own way. And while Divali continues to be embraced and celebrated by Government agencies and the corporate sector, Trinidad and Tobago is yet to have a Ministry of Multiculturalism, an Equal Opportunities Commission, and give fair funding for Indian-based cultural events.
