ONE, ONE DUTTY BUILD A VILLAGE IN GUYANA:
The story of Hari Prashad and Prashad Nagar

Baytoram Ramharack

Hari Prashad (1898-1987), the son of Girmitiyas (indentured Indians), was the founder of the post-World War II private housing scheme of Prashad Nagar in Georgetown, Guyana. Born in poverty but with a tenacity to engage in risk-taking business ventures, Hari rose from being a tailor, woodcutter, boat owner, rice miller, coconut farm owner, “dry goods” store owner, gold and diamond miner, and livestock owner to become a real estate developer. A genuine captain of industry, whose economic success was synonymous with an unpretentious spirit of generosity, Hari’s mission and moral compass were rooted in his deeply held Hindu cultural values. Hari Prashad’s legacy is celebrated with the republication of his autobiography, accompanied by several authored chapters examining the story behind the establishment of Prashad Nagar. This book is an essential contribution to Indian historiography in Guyana.
