Invitation to Zoom Public Meeting by Staff Reporter
Together, Guyana and Suriname occupy a greater landmass than the rest of the Caribbean combined (379k km2 vs 225k km2). The recent discovery of oil as well as the election of new governments in both countries has been attracting fortune seekers in droves to this new-found El Dorado. The Guyana-Suriname basin has become one of the world’s hottest oil-drilling zones with Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total, Apache and several other companies doing explorations and operations.
To facilitate this burgeoning energy enterprise, hotels, highways and ports are under construction. The need for improved infrastructure has drawn trained professionals and skilled workers from the region and the world, all seeking a share of Guyana’s astonishing economic growth rate, predicted to rise to 47.5% in 2022. Besides the petrochemical industry, Guyana and Suriname have been seeking to attract direct foreign investors to their agricultural sectors by promoting aquaculture and high-cash crops as well as a hybrid variety of sheep that would revolutionise animal husbandry. The governments of Guyana and Suriname have devised incentives to encourage their diasporians – who had fled when times were tough, dangerous and corrupt – to return to contribute to, and enjoy, the development in these two former Dutch colonies.
