Obesity, Diabetes and Ethnicity in Trinidad and Tobago

By Anthropologist Dr Kumar Mahabir

More than any other ethnic group, Indo-Trinidadians (Indians) consume more foods high in fat (oil, ghee, etc.), starch (roti, doubles, alloo, etc.) and  sugar. Indians are at risk of becoming diabetic mainly because of their diet. Other contributing factors include obesity, sedentary lifestyle and family history.
